Melanie Janine Brown was born May 29th, 1975, in Leeds, England.Mel's mom, Andrea, is white and her father is from the Carribean island of Nevis. In her childhood, she danced and played the drums. She got in a lot of trouble because of her edgy, in your face attitude. She also thought people called her "Brown" because of her skin, but of course it was because of her last name.

Her first job was as a telemarketer. Then she moved to London to try to get a break in the entertainment business. She appeared on a show called "Coronation Street", and met Mel C. when they were both dancers for a music group. Like the other Spice Girls, she answered an add in a paper called "The Stage", went to the audition, and was chosen.

As you've already read on the Spice Girls page, Mel B., a.k.a. 'Scary Spice' had a lot of success with the Spice girls. In 1998, Melanie B. had her first solo single, with a hip-hop sound called 'I Want You Back' which featured rapper Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott'.   The song went to # 1.   Melanie's next single was a cover of and old song, 'Word Up' which went to # 14 in 1999.

She was married and had a child, a daughter Phoenix.  However, her marriage didn't last.  Melanie divorced in 2000 during the era of the Spice Girls 'Forever' album.

In 2000, Melanie released her next single which would be from her debut album.  The song was 'Tell Me' which hit the charts at # 4.  The album, 'Hot' would follow the single peaking the charts at # 28.  Then for a while, Mel B., Emma, Victoria and Melanie C. returned with their hit album, 'Forever'.  But Mel B. wasn't stopping her solo career.  In 2001, Melanie Brown released her next single, 'Feels So Good' which went to # 5 and then the last single from her debut album was 'Lullaby', a song about her daughter, which went to # 15.

After 'Hot' and 'Forever', Melanie went on to acting.  She starred on the broadway play 'Rent' and was in several films including 'The Seat Filler' with Destiny's Child singer, Kelly Rowland.

2005 saw the return of Melanie Brown. with some new music.  Her come back single 'Today' was released as well as a new album, 'L.A. State of Mind'.

Her movie 'The Seat Filler' was released in the US in Feb. 06.  It's a pretty great movie, check it out.

In 2007, Melanie gave birth to her second daughter, Angel Iris.  Mel also launched her own clothing line, "Catty Couture". She premiered her first collection with a fashion show for buyers in downtown L.A. on April 7th 2008. Later that year, she took part on the US tv series, Dancing with the Stars and finished in 2nd place.  Though many fans and viewers believe she should have won.

In the summer of 2008, Mel B co-hosted her own reality show with Joey Fatone airing on TLC. The Singing Office, which premiered on June 29th, 2008 had Brown and Fatone pitted against each other to find the best singers out there working in typical American offices.
